Handing your own written material over to someone else and giving them the opportunity to examine and change it is an act of trust. Whether it is a business proposal, first (or even subsequent) novel, journal article, web content or otherwise, the words we write have value to us, and it is important to us that the identity, or ‘voice’ of that work – the tone, style and content – remain intact.

 

My responsibility as an editorial professional is to identify that voice and ensure that any changes I make are faithful to the original intention of the work. The purpose of my input, therefore, is to enhance the text, to ensure it is clear of anything that obstructs the author’s voice. This may involve removing inaccuracies of spelling, grammar or punctuation to improve readability; checking the text’s meaning is clear; ensuring consistency of style; or checking for coherence in the argument or narrative, along with a range of other tasks.
